Introduction

Faculty of Pharmacy, Hamdard University, Karachi

Faculty of Pharmacy, Hamdard University is a quality education imparting research-based faculty. Its uniqueness is its highly experienced, dedicated faculty members and helping staff. The faculty owns campuses in Karachi and Islamabad offering degree programs in Pharm.D., M. Phil. and Ph. D which are recognized by respective councils. The aim of the faculty is to provide excellent education with a commitment to producing competent Pharmacists, skilled Professionals, and Researchers to cater to the need of patients and to become an integral part of the healthcare system around the globe under the leadership of the proactive dean and talented heads of departments.

Growth and development in achieving excellence in higher education are great challenges in today’s innovative world of technology. The global aspect of applied knowledge in career selection is another intervention to meet the goals of successful professional life. Keeping a keen eye on this changing need of the day, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Hamdard University is committed to taking a leap strategically in preparing the graduates to face the upcoming challenges. On the other side, the vision of Shaheed Hakim Said is the candle enlightening the path toward the pursuit of excellence. Now, technology has shrunk the world like a digital app just on a finger so the importance of collegial leadership is to reassure the developmental framework for digital learning. Apart from digital literacy and quality education, our goal is to prepare students as future leaders. Research is the key feature in higher education by which universities are recognized and achieve high-ranking reputations in the world. Another important goal is to create a liaison between industry and foreign institutions to practice and exchange knowledge of research. We are somehow, privileged in having affiliation with other Foreign Universities to expand the training and research program at the international level which needs strengthening in getting more chances for advancement and success. Because of our combined efforts of faculty and Hamdard University administration in fostering quality education, training and strategical planning for achieving its goal in five years keeping into consideration to achieve long-term goals in the next twenty-five years, the Faculty of Pharmacy is striving to embark on a prominent position in the community.

Prof. Dr. Shamim Akhtar did her B. Pharm in 1986, M. Pharm Pharmaceutical chemistry in 1990 and Ph.D. Pharmaceutical chemistry in 2003 from university of Karachi. She has an overall academic and professional experience of more than 33 years. She has joined Hamdard University in 2018. She has authored 45+ research publications in Journals of National and International repute.

Department mission is to communicate essential principles of pharmacology. To initiate pharmacological research along with evidence based scientific knowledge to achieve excellence in both innovation and academic activities and to prepare our students according to global need.
Academic Rules

1. Academic Policies and Procedure

1.1 Academic Year and Semester
  • The academic year is divided into Spring and Fall semesters and an optional Summer semester
Semester Duration ( Fall / Spring )
  • 16 – 18 weeks (inclusive of 1 – 2 weeks for exams), minimum 16 weeks of teaching excluding
Summer Semester
  • In a summer semester, students can only register in deficiency/failure/repeat courses or in research work.
1.2 Course Load per Semester The limits on semester course load shall be as follows:
  • Under-graduate Programs: 15 – 18 Credit Hrs.
  • Graduate Programs: 15 – 18 Credit Hrs.
  • Post-graduate Programs: 9 – 12 Credit Hrs.
Final semester Students of undergraduate and graduate program may select one add course with the approval of competent authority. Note: In Pharm D Credit Hrs are up to 22. 1.3 Course/Semester Registration A student must register each semester (before last date of course Add/Drop) until the completion of degree requirements. Failure to register in two consecutive semesters amounts to cancellation of admission. 1.4 Course Add/Drop Provisions for course Add/Drop:
  • A student can add/drop any course (due to any reason) before the course Add/Drop end date without any financial or academic penalty. Add/Drop of maximum 02 courses is allowed.
  • A student is not required to pay course fee for dropping a course within the Course Add/Drop period. (If already paid then Accounts Department will credit it to the next semester).
  • Students dropping a course after Add/Drop period and two weeks before the Final Exam (whether attended classes or not) get ‘W’ grade but have to pay full course fee.
  • If a student does not drop a course (whether attended classes or not) and does not appear in the Final Exam suffers both financial and academic penalty (gets ‘F’ grade and pays full course fee).
1.5 Pre-Requisite Course A student cannot register in a course without first passing its pre-requisite course (if any). If a student fails a pre-requisite course then he/she is to repeat it on priority basis after paying the prescribed fee. 1.6 Course Withdrawal Provisions for course withdrawal:
  • A student can apply for withdrawal from any course two weeks before the final examination.
  • Full fee is payable for any withdrawn course. HU does not refund full or partial fee under any circumstances.
  • The transcript shows “W” grade for any withdrawn course. The CGPA/SGPA calculation does not include letter grade “W”.
  • A student cannot withdraw more than two courses in one semester and cannot withdraw the same course twice.
1.7 Incomplete ‘I’ Grade Provisions for ‘I’ grade (‘I’ ⇒ ‘Incomplete’):
  • After having satisfied that a student has genuine reason beyond any doubt that disabled him/her to appear in the final examination, HoD; with the consent of the course teacher, can award grade ‘I’ to a student in any subject. This provision exists to benefit a good student who has passed the Mid-Term exam and has satisfactory attendance.
  • A student with ‘I’ grade in a subject, needs to appear in final exam of that subject in later semesters, however, sessional marks will remain the same as in the previous semester.
  • A student is not required to pay the fee for re-registering in grade “I” course in a later semester.
1.8 Course Exemption or Transfer Migration from other HEI Provisions for course exemptions and transfer of credits:
  • Only HEC recognized institute/university is acceptable for migration/transfer of credits.
  • The Equivalence Committee recommends transfer of credits/migration cases after comparison of the courses completed at other institution and the similar courses offered at HU.
  • Courses with at least ‘B’ grade are transferable as per HU Grading scale.
  • Transferable Credits/Courses in degree programs:
  • Maximum 50% of courses or earned Credit Hrs in under-graduate/graduate programs
  • Maximum 2 courses in doctoral programs
1.9 Drop-out from Degree Program The University shall drop a student from his/her degree program on:
  • Failing to complete the degree requirements within the allowed maximum duration.
  • Disciplinary grounds.

2. Grade Development

2.1 The University provides opportunity to the students for improvement of CGPA if it is below 2.00 for undergraduate students, below 2.50 for graduate students and below 3.00 for post-graduate students. 2.2 Whenever a student fails or gets ‘F’ grade, he/she has to repeat the course, whenever offered. A student can take a new course in lieu of the elective course in which he/she failed. Improvement of grades is allowed in all courses with not more than:
  • ‘C+’ (C plus) grade or C+ equivalent marks – Under-graduate students.
  • ‘C+’ (C plus) grade or C+ equivalent marks – Graduate students.
  • ‘B-’ (B minus) grade or B- equivalent marks – Post-graduate students
2.3 In order to improve CGPA a student may be allowed to repeat a course or take in-lieu course (only against an elective course) but only after completing/earning required coursework credits. In case of an in-lieu course the student has to mention on the relevant Form that against which passed course (s) he/she is taking in-lieu course. 2.4 A   student   may   be   allowed   to   take   additional   course   (s)   but   only   after completing/earning required coursework credits. The grade earned in additional course will not be counted towards CGPA calculation. Prior permission of the Dean is required to register in failed/repeat/ additional/in-lieu course (s). 2.5 On repeating a course for improvement of grade purposes, best of the previous grade or newly earned grade will be shown on the transcript and the CGPA will be calculated accordingly. In case of in-lieu course, grade earned in in-lieu course will be counted towards CGPA calculation. 2.6 During the entire coursework, the total number of courses done in the category of repeat (for improvement purposes) and in-lieu courses will depend upon degree program requirements. 2.7 Students registered in failed/repeat/in-lieu course (s) will become ineligible for any honours or awards, the student will pay prescribed fee of the repeat/failed/in- lieu/additional course (s) and all terms and conditions for registering in a regular course shall apply.

3. Attendance

If a student fails to attend 75% lecture sessions of a course, he/she disqualifies to appear in the final examination of that course. Short attendance cases get ‘F’ grade.

4. Plagiarism

Any plagiarism in academic work at any stage, even if reported after completion of degree and fake documents submitted by the student, even those submitted at the time of admission shall result in cancellation of degree.
